Veljavna zakonodaja pravno ureja štiri oblike življenjske skupnosti, in sicer zakonsko zvezo, zunajzakonsko skupnost ter sklenjeno in nesklenjeno par- tnersko zvezo. Pravice istospolno usmerjenih oseb se navezujejo predvsem na osebni status, ki ima vpliv oziroma posledice tudi na druga pravna področja. S sprejetjem Zakona o partnerski zvezi (ZPZ), ki celoviteje ureja položaj isto- spolno usmerjenih oseb v Sloveniji, se položaj približuje izenačitvi istospolno usmerjenih oseb s pravicami, kot jih imajo heterospolno usmerjene osebe. Še vedno pa ostajajo tri velike ovire do popolne enakopravnosti, in sicer prepoved posvojitve nebiološkega otroka partnerja, prepoved oploditve z biomedicinsko pomočjo ter sam zakon, ki ureja isto materijo kot Zakon o zakonski zvezi in družinskih razmerjih (ZZZDR) oziroma Družinski zakonik, ki ga je nadome- stil, vendar kot drug zakon in pod drugim imenom samo zaradi ene osebne okoliščine.

Applicable legislation regulates four forms of partnerships, i.e. marriage, co- habitation and formal and non-formal civil unions. The rights of homosexual persons primarily relate to one’s personal situation affecting other areas of law as well. With the adoption of the Civil Union Act (ZPZ) that more holistically regulates the legal status of homosexual people in Slovenia, the status is mo- ving towards the equality of homosexual and heterosexual people in terms of legal rights. Three impediments standing in the way of full equality still persist: the prohibition of the adoption of a partner’s non-biological child, the prohibition of assisted conception, and the Civil Union Act itself, regulating the same matter as the Marriage and Family Relations Act (or the Family Code replacing it) although under a different name, it being a different law, and due to one personal circumstance, the circumstance being sexual orientation.
