Avtor v tem članku utrjuje tezo, da so pravni pojmi »lastništvo«, »terjatev«, »ozemlje«, »poroka« idr. brez vsakršnega pomenskega ozira in namenu služijo le kot tehnika ponazarjanja. Z drugimi besedami: gre za vmesnik ali vzročni vezni člen, in omogočajo ekonomičnost izražanja. Tako, na primer, obstaja množica pogojujočih stanj (pravnih dejstev) Dn iz katerih je mogoče sklepati na obstoj lastništva L: nakup, prilastitev res nullius, dedovanje itd. Prav tako obstaja množica stanj (pravnih posledic) Pn, ki izhajajo iz lastništva L: zahtevek zoper tiste, ki stvar zadržujejo v svoji posesti, zahtevek za odškodnino zoper tiste, ki so stvari krivdno povzročili škodo itd. Lastništvo (L) tako zgolj nadomešča sistematično povezavo, po kateri ima vsako posamično pogojujoče dejstvo za posledico celoto pravnih posledic. Obravnavani pravi pojmi torej povezujejo disjunktivno množico pogojujočih dejstev s kumulativno množico pravnih posledic.

In this famous article, Ross described a fictional South Seas island society, in which the following rules are in use: (1) If a man encounters his mother-in-law he is tû-tû. (1’) If a man has eaten of chief’s food he is tû-tû. (1’’) If a man ... (2) If a man is tû-tû, he shall be subjected to a ceremony of purification. According to Ross, an assertion that someone is tû-tû, can be verified by proving the existence of either the first or the second state of affairs, i.e. the factual antecedent or the legal consequent. This is true, Ross observed, even though the word tû-tû is devoid of any meaning, pure superstition or nonsense. In fact, one could omit using the term altogether, for it is plain that quite apart from what “tû-tû” stands for, or even if it stands for nothing whatsoever, the two pronouncements (1 and 2 above), when combined in accordance with the usual rules of logic, will amount to the same thing as the following pronouncement: (3) If a man has eaten of chief’s food he shall be subjected to a ceremony of purification.
