SUMMARY
In this introductory chapter of his famous book Institutions of Law Neil MacCormick outlines the chapters that are to follow. Part 1 of the book explores the explanatory definition 'law is institutional normative order'. In part 2 attention turns to the kinds of relationships that law constitutes and regulates. The task of part 3 is to include consideration of law in its context within the state and civil society, to each of which it is essential as a constitutive element. Finally, part 4 deals with certain fundamental conceptual issues concerning law and morality and concerning method in legal theory.
